My name is Savannah Ryan. I am a cookbook author, food writer and the founder of The Foodie Kitchen — a blog and cookbook series dedicated to seed oil free cooking, MAHA nutrition and ancestral fat traditions from every food culture on earth.

I have been cooking without seed oils since I first understood what they were and what they do to the body. That understanding changed everything about how I cook, what I buy, and how I think about food. It eventually produced 22 published books, hundreds of recipes, and this blog — which exists to make seed oil free cooking accessible, practical and delicious for anyone who wants to eat real food.

Why I Cook Without Seed Oils

Seed oils — canola, vegetable, sunflower, soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower and rice bran oil — are the most chemically unstable cooking fats in widespread use. They are extracted from industrial crops using hexane solvents, refined at high temperatures, bleached, and deodorised before they reach a bottle. The polyunsaturated fats they contain oxidise when heated, producing aldehydes and other toxic compounds that have been linked in peer-reviewed research to inflammation, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disruption.

The populations with the best health outcomes in recorded nutritional history — the populations studied by Weston A. Price in the 1930s, the populations of traditional India, West Africa, the Pacific Islands and the Mediterranean — cooked in butter, ghee, tallow, lard, coconut oil and olive oil. These are the fats that human bodies evolved alongside. These are the fats I cook with. And these are the fats that every book in the Savor series and every recipe on this blog is built around.

This is not a trend. It is not a diet. It is a return to the way human beings have cooked for thousands of years — and the food is better for it in every possible way.
